Dear NEO Family,

Gloria and I want to thank you for the many expressions of love we received at the District Thanksgiving Service and through the Christmas season. The cards and expressions of love have meant so much to us! We hope you realize how much we love you and how blessed we feel to work alongside you in the work of Christ in Northeast Oklahoma.

We invite you to share our joy in the arrival of our newest granddaughter, Everly Blythe Mitchell!  “Evie” was born December 11th, at 8 am, and was 6 lbs., 8 oz., 20 inches long.  Evie is blessed with wonderful parents, Keri and Damien, an excited big sister, Elliana, a wonderful church family in Dallas, an extended family that will seek to bless her and love her.

We rejoice that Evie enters a world that has been redeemed by a Savior born in a stable in Bethlehem. Because of Christ’s coming, Evie can have life full and never ending. In the midst of all the challenges and trials she will encounter, she can have hope, love, joy and peace.

My prayer is that you will encounter Christ in a fresh way this last week of Advent. Jack Hayford says, “This day, the summons of the Spirit is to open your heart as a child: to welcome the expectation of God’s promise and power, to transform what needs to be, to forgive what failed to be, to heal what yearns to be, and to restore what cries out to be.” May you experience His fresh touch today.

The Board of General Superintendents sent Christmas greetings to our pastors. I think you will enjoy what they shared.  http://medialibrary.nazarene.org/media/bgs-christmas-thank-you

NEO  District News

·  Five of us from the District attended training provided by Dynamic Church Planting International last week in Carthage, MO. We were stirred and challenged to be about the Savior’s mission of reaching the lost. Some ask, “why should we be planting new churches?” The most important single argument for making new church development a high priority is that it is still the most effective means for reaching unchurched persons. Pray with us for God’s vision for planting new churches in NEO.

·  The District was recently given translation equipment with 36 radios and a transmitter. This will be a huge help for us in providing Spanish translation during District gatherings. If your local church needs this equipment for a special service, please let us know.

·  Two families connected with the NEO family recently lost their homes in fires. Jeremy and Amy Johnson, son and daughter-in-law of Pastor Jim and Jan Johnson of Barnsdall lost their home in a recent fire. A family from Fuente de Vida lost their trailer and possessions and had no insurance.

·  NEO NYI Mid-Winter Retreat will be held January 31 - February 2.  More details and registration information coming soon.

·  Don Engie has resigned from the pastorate at Grove and plans to move to Neosho, MO. Don and Jaci have incredible hearts for the mission of Christ. They are going to take a break from leadership in local church ministry but not from the mission of Christ. Pray for their family during this time of transition.

The District Office will be closed the week of December 23-27 and on January 1 in observance of Christmas and New Year's. For urgent matters, Dr. McKellips can be reached at his cell number.

Our theme as a District this year has been “Radical Together”. We realize how easy it is to drift to what is comfortable, so together we are seeking to hear Jesus’ words and settle for nothing other than radical obedience to him!

A key point in our emphasis is rapidly approaching as we together embark on a 60 Day Radical Experiment, January 13 – March 13, 2014.  The NEO Radical Experiment involves six specific challenges. These action steps are adaptions of the challenges David Platt gives in his book Radical for a yearlong radical experiment. More than that, they are a call for us to renew our heritage as Nazarenes. These action steps challenge us to follow way of Christ, the way of Wesley and the way of Bresee.

1. Pray for the world. The early Nazarenes were energized by a vision of worldwide ministry. Every day for 60 days, NEO Nazarenes will pray that the glory of God would fill the earth. Sign up for the 60-Day prayer experience.

2. Read through the entire New Testament. Nazarenes believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures, given by plenary inspiration, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living. Studies continue to show that that the most significant catalyst for spiritual growth, with no close second, is engagement with the Bible. During these 60 Days, NEO Nazarenes will be asked to read through the New Testament, asking God to give us understanding and obedience to His Word. You Version has a 60-Day Plan for reading through the New Testament that could prove helpful.

3. Commit your life to multiplying community. The Nazarene Sunday School and prayer meeting were vital to early Nazarenes as they “watched over one another in love” (phrase John Wesley used about the ministry of his small groups). NEO Nazarenes will commit themselves wholeheartedly to the local church. But even deeper than that, they will be asked to commit themselves to a small group that is intentionally sharing, showing, and teaching the Word while serving the world together.

4. Sacrifice your money for a specific purpose. Early Nazarenes gave sacrificially of their resources to start new churches at home and to evangelize the world. They also stood shoulder to shoulder with the poor and broken, funding orphanages, homes for unwed mothers and rescue missions.  During these 60 days, NEO Nazarenes will be asked to look at all of their expenses as a church, as individuals and as families through the lens of the needs in the world. We will be challenged to set a cap on our lifestyles so that we can free up as much of our resources as possible for the sake of the glory of Christ in His church, among the lost, and among the poor.

5. Spend your time in another context. The Nazarene mission statement is to “Make Christlike Disciples in the Nations”. All of us are called to leave the comfort of our community. During these sixty days, opportunities will be given for individuals, families and small groups to give one day of your time in Gospel ministry outside of your community for the sake of God’s glory in all the world.

6. Live the Spirit Filled Life. The uniting core for Nazarenes has always been belief in a real cleansing grace that conquers sin. If we try to carry out the mission given by God in our own strength and efforts, it will end in utter and complete failure. But as we live the Spirit Filled or Sanctified Life, God works in common people to display uncommon power and purity.  Participants will be asked to daily pray the “Exchanged Life Prayer”.

I trust that you will join with others in your local church in January as we embark on the 60 Day Experiment.

· We welcome Daniel Newman as the new  Pastor to Families at Core Church.

· We request prayers for the District Advisory Board as we meet again on Dec. 17 to strategize about expansion of our Compassionate Ministries on the District. Manna House is already doing outstanding work in providing food and clothing for those in need. We are now discussing how we can expand our presence in the heart of the city and begin to help individuals with lifestyle changes that bring lasting results. Pray for us as we seek ways to bring the life changing gospel of Christ to the heart of the city.

· One of the Key Initiatives of the USA/Canada Region is Multi-faceted Church Planting. A key component of implementing that initiative is the training provided by Dynamic Church Planting International. Dynamic Church Planting International is offering training nearby in Carthage, MO on Dec. 9–13. Contact Dave McKellips (dmckellips@neonaz.com) if you would like more information.

· Aaron and Brittany Bolerjack will be back in Oklahoma on home assignment from January - May 2014, between Mission Corps projects in the UK.  Let them know if there's anything they can to do to help promote missions in your church during that time frame.

Thank you to the churches who are adopting a pastor of another church at Christmas – Bartlesville, Broken Arrow Core, Broken Arrow First, Sapulpa, Tulsa Central, Tulsa Hills and Tulsa Regency Park. We are better together!

I Want to Celebrate. . .

Curtis Martin, Mannford. . . The posts are in the ground for our new outreach center.  The plumbing has been roughed in and preparations are being made to pour the concrete.  We are excited.  We wish to say 'Thank You' for the new sound system which was purchased for us by the Sapulpa church!  A special 'Thank You' to Pastor Jared Chestnut for designing and arranging for the purchase of the system, and for installing it with Pastor Curtis assisting.  What a difference it made this past Sunday!

Claude Guy, Sand Springs. . . We scheduled a baptism service to baptize 2 of our pre-teens and during the service, 5 others (2 adults and 3 kids) came forward to be baptized!  Praise the Lord!

Mark Hiehle, Claremore. . .  This has been an exciting month!  We had 3 people baptized, two were a father and son who just received Jesus as Savior and Lord.  We had a terrific evening with Dan Bohi in which just about everyone in attendance came to the altar for spiritual renewal, healing or a special touch from God.  We also had two babies born to members in the congregation.  We are rejoicing with new life both physically and spiritually!

Brad Farnsworth, BA Core Church at Aspen Creek. . . We baptized 8 new people, including a mother and her two children, and three teen siblings. We also had 47 first-time visitors. We took in 5 new members.

Scottie Behm, Chelsea. . . 1) We are very thankful to Our Lord Jesus and for all our leaders, within and over our church. A special thanks was shared with all the church board members, and Nancy Reeves who is stepping down as church board treasurer. 2) We participated in the Chelsea revival; our focus for the message was being radical together in our discipleship to Christ. 3) We were able, praise God, to acknowledge and express our sincere gratitude for all the hospitality and wonderful support our local churches shared with us in 2013 as a great example of being radical together.

Douglas Reyes, Tulsa Central Mahanaim (Hispanic). . . 1) Saturday  night on the 23 we had  prayer (7:00 pm to 12:00 midnight) with 62 people praying and worshiping our Lord Jesus Christ.  2) Every Saturday morning our sisters were willing to hand out gospel tracts and information from our church have been allocated a total of 400 flyers.  3) During the month we gave away 18 Bibles to people who were in our church. Also bought an amplifier for bass, bass guitar, acoustic guitar amplifier, an acoustic guitar, it had a cost of 1,400 dollars (money obtained from the sale of meals the last Sunday of each month). 4) God is greatly blessing as we will go " from least to most " that God is doing great things in our meetings. Thanks for praying for us. Our goal for next year is to be twice what we are now. We firmly believe we are doing the will of God.

David Stevens, Vinita. . . As I reviewed last year’s report, I was reminded of a lady who got saved and baptized last year. Within a few months she passed away. How thankful I am to be part of God’s work and help these people make peace with God. We had another new attender who accepted Christ and was baptized in his home before he passed away last month. This was the grandfather of Shea Barr, one of our ministers in training. Shea led his grandfather to the Lord and arranged for me to hold the baptism service.

NEO District Thanksgiving Service
November 24, 5pm

Dear NEO Family,

I am very excited about our upcoming District Thanksgiving service on Nov. 24, 5pm ! I want it to be like Bresee’s Love Feasts, with testimonies that move people toward personal experience of God’s grace, vibrant worship in song and communion. A light meal will be available after the service for the District family. I hope you will come and participate in the worship service and fellowship, this Sunday night, November 24, 5pm at Tulsa Central Church.

One of the Key Initiatives of the USA/Canada Region is Multi-faceted Church Planting. A key component of implementing that initiative is the training provided by Dynamic Church Planting International. I have been hearing wonderful reports of the impact this training is making on Districts across the US. Dynamic Church Planting International is offering training nearby in Carthage, MO on Dec. 9 - 13. I would love to see a number of pastors and laymen join the number in attendance at this training conference. I encourage every pastor to consider receiving this training. The registration is only $35 and the Carthage Church is offering free housing (either with a family in their church or sleeping on an air-mattress in a classroom.)

While our efforts to start new churches has grown in NEO over the past seven years, we are still closing more churches than we are starting. Don’t you think God could use you to begin a new congregation or plant a new church or partner with other Nazarene churches in your area to launch a new work? What is our alternative?

Giving Thanks and Thanks Giving

By David A. Busic, General Superintendent

It has been said that Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings. I do not disagree with that sentiment. We all have so much for which to be thankful. The essence of God is love, and God’s bountiful love is a continual source of undeserved and bountiful blessing. Thanksgiving begins with thanks.

Even so, I am also reminded of what W. T. Purkiser once said: “Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.” The Apostle Paul seems to have acknowledged the truth of this when he wrote, “God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NIV). Thanksgiving is about being grateful for our blessings—and then blessing others through them.

This is also why Christians say that giving is an act of worship. Stewardship is not just a way for the church to pay the bills. It is a way for us to express our gratitude to God and to confess that “All that I have comes from God, and by faith I trust that God will continue to provide as I become a channel of His blessings to those around me.”

The Thanksgiving prayer of an unknown Christian has always moved me:

“I do not thank Thee, Lord, that I have bread to eat while others starve; nor yet for work to do while empty hands solicit heaven; nor for a body strong while other bodies flatten beds of pain. No, not for these do I give thanks; but I am grateful, Lord, because my meager loaf I may divide; for that my busy hands may move to meet another’s need; because my doubled strength I may expend to steady one who faints. Yes, for all these do I give thanks! For heart to share, desire to bear, and will to live, flamed into one by deathless love—thanks be to God for this! Unspeakable! His Gift!”

Thanksgiving is first thanks, then giving. Let us use our blessings to be a blessing!

NEO District Thanksgiving Service
November 24, 5pm

The District Thanksgiving Service will be on Sunday, November 24, 5pm, modeled after Bresee’s “Love Feast”.  This is going to be so much fun! Our Hispanic and English speaking congregations will be united for a wonderful service of worship, testimonies and the Lord’s Supper. An optional time of fellowship and food will be held at the conclusion of the service. Watch for more details.

Interested in Nazarene Missions?

Come find out about the many opportunities to serve overseas through the Church of the Nazarene!  The Mobilization Office of Global Mission will be conducting a Cross-Cultural Orientation at Southern Nazarene University on November 15-17, 2013.  Cross-Cultural Orientation (CCO) events are designed to assess, train, and orient those who are interested in cross-cultural ministry in and through the Church of the Nazarene. I Want to Celebrate. . .

Bill Hilton, Tulsa Living Hope. . . I am encouraging the church to pray and seek the Lord's guidance regarding the open door He has prepared for us to walk through. I'm not yet positive where that door leads or what is beyond it. However, I am confident that if HE has opened it then it must be good.

David Stevens, Vinita. . . Vinita Nazarene is a great place to worship! Our people care about their Church and about each other. We had an older gentleman testify that he just got saved. Our ministerial students are doing well in their studies and in their work for the Church.

Casey Hollingsworth, Miami New Life. . . New baptisms and members received into membership!  We continue to experience weekly "collisions" of God's mighty Presence!  He always comes out the winner in those!  We leave feeling wrecked and undone by the presence!  We took 11 individuals from our church to the National Awakening Prayer Conference ("Encounter"!) in Dallas.  I praise God for the refilling of His Spirit in our people who attended!  I can't wait to see how this is going to affect our church!  There is so much work left for Him to do!

Tim Odom, Collinsville. . . On October 5th & 6th we had our 90th Celebration/Homecoming. We had a hayride on the 5th and a great service and time together with Pastor Tommy Loving and Pastor Wayne Thomas and other pastors. We had youth pastors, Jim Winfrey and Kevin Williams, also other members who have made such an impact on our church. We had a lot of sharing and reminiscing. A reminder of the call and challenge for our church to do our best for Christ, because He has done His best for us.

Cole Weston, Okmulgee. . . Fearless Marriage class is about to wrap up next month. Participation could be better, but those who have come have learned a lot.

Scottie Behm, Chelsea. . .
  • Our congregation -- they surprised me with a wonderful pastor appreciation dinner. It was a lot of fun, with great food.
  • We celebrate and honor with great gratitude a large financial gift from the estates of long-term members, Fred and Joan Hemphill.
  • That we are seeing God at work, answering prayer. We praise Him for His faithfulness and how we are learning to be more “Radically” dependent on Him.

Brad Farnsworth, Core Church at Aspen Creek. . . We baptized 4 new people, including a mother and her two children.

Steve Brown, Cleveland. . . We had a great October. Each week the services seemed to build a stronger sense of the Holy Spirit as people were praying and fasting leading up to the revival services and continued throughout the month. We had several people seeking sanctification during different nights of the revival. Many were challenged to spend more time in prayer for our community. We had an average attendance of 38 each night and many from the Pawhuska church made the trip each night to attend. I really believe that God wants to do great things on the NW Zone and throughout the NEO district. The excitement of revival has encourage many and challenged all to live a more holy and surrendered life.

Larry Allen, Bristow. . .  We had our second annual Fall Festival a few days ago. We had music, a power team called Radical U-Turn, food, games for the kids, etc. We had over 150 people attend and the great news is that 30 people gave their life to Christ. One of the power teams mother came and was saved. Several new people to our church came forward and so did other members of their family that attended our church for the first time. The Holy Spirit was in attendance and the prayers and planning of our people were rewarded  greatly. It was a powerful night of fun, fellowship and God. We had two new families show up that were looking for a church and we are praising God for his goodness.

Georgina Lopez, Cielos Abiertos. . .  Four people were saved this month.

Yalmi Izaguirre, Regency Park Hispanic. . . We had a Friend Day with a good attendance.
